Located 8 miles from Lewiston and 35 miles from Portland, Willow Pond Farm is a small diversified farm on 35 acres. Jill and Charlie Agnew, own and work the farm with the valuable addition of seasonal help. Most of the work in the vegetable garden is done with horses and hand tools. Five acres are MOFGA-certified organic vegetables and raspberries. Twelve acres are in orchard. Several acres of pasture support a small flock of sheep and work horses. A flock of laying hens and turkeys are also seasonal inhabitants.
In 1989, Willow Pond Farm started the first Community Supported Agriculture project in Maine. Shareholders not only receive their shares of vegetables, but also have an opportunity to participate. Shareholders are welcome to spend time at the farm, have a picnic, look at the animals and watch the garden grow. Picking flowers and herbs and working in the children's garden are favorite shareholder activities. Harvest parties and volunteer days occur throughout the season to coincide with the particularly heavy crops or labor demands. Helping hands are always welcome! Budgeting meetings and other planning sessions are held in the winter. The Willow Pond CSA offers people a chance to get in touch with the earth, air and growing food.
